Guidelines for preserving your natural hair-on-hide and woven pieces.
For our hair-on-hide rugs, regular vacuuming is permitted, but always vacuum in the direction of the hair. Do not use the rotating brush attachment (beater bar), as this can pull or damage the natural hide hairs. For daily maintenance, a brisk shake outside is often sufficient.
Natural hides are surprisingly resistant to stains, but immediate action is key. If a spill occurs, soak it up immediately with a paper towel or sponge. Do not wipe or rub; rubbing will push the liquid deep into the leather backing. For solid matter, scrape it up gently with the blunt edge of a knife in the direction of the hair.
Never soak your hide or woven mat. Water can cause the natural leather backing of the hide to stiffen and curl upon drying. If the hide does get damp, lay it flat in an area with good air circulation to dry naturally. Do not place it in direct sunlight or use artificial heat sources like hair dryers.
Like all natural materials, extended exposure to harsh, direct sunlight can cause colors to fade over time. We recommend rotating your mat every few months to ensure even wear and light exposure, especially in rooms with large, sunny windows.
To keep the hair looking soft and untangled, especially in high-traffic areas, lightly brush the hide with a hard-bristled plastic brush or a designated pet brush. Always brush in the natural direction of the hair grain to restore its natural sheen and clear out deep dust.
